Six Sentence Sunday 4.29.12

Excerpt from Moons' Kiss by Kimberly K. Comeau:
His handlers pulled him back and he almost fell. They felt him lose his balance and jerked upward on his robe to catch his weight. He hoped he kept the fright of falling from his face, and caught his balance with his own grip on someone’s arm.
Out of sight of the mob, arms encircled him, held him, supported him until two men again lifted him and carried him to his room.
"Manerra must stay," he told them on the stairs going down, when he thought they could hear him. "Manerra must stay," he told them again in the hall in case they'd not understood him on the stairs, because the janquer held decision-making powers now and he was certain they intended to leave the city as soon as they could smuggle him from the house and down the mountain.
Thank you for leaving a comment. I appreciate every one of them. Enjoy other Six Sunday author excerpts here

Six Sentence Sunday 4.22.12

Excertp from Moons' Kiss by Kimberly K. Comeau
She looked up, around, anywhere in an effort to escape her thoughts. She remembered a time not long ago when the position and honor of being janquer felt sacred, felt invincible. How naive she'd been.
Seeing the blood on Aya's robe this morning brought back memories she'd hoped she'd buried. But the similarities between Aya and her father had collided this morning, shaking her so thoroughly that she felt herself withdraw from Aya, afraid to love him, to stand close to him, because she feared seeing him drenched in blood as she'd seen her father that day.
She started counting steps to avoid remembering.

Six Sentence Sunday

excerpt from Moons' Kiss by Kimberly K. Comeau:

The violence of the morning commingled with the intimate violence of the surgery. Manerra's hair rose and his scalp ached. Even with eyes closed he could not escape the sounds of the surgery or the heavy smell of burning oil mingled with the scent of blood and the pungent-sweet aroma of dayflower. He envisioned Yutrenta smoothing the scalp flap over the living brain and stitching the wound closed, but in his too-vivid imagination, the center of that skin flap rose and fell with the pulse of a heartbeat until he moaned and shifted in an effort to escape that image.

How could any living thing survive the violence of that intrusion?

The same way a seed falling into a rock crack grew into a tree; but such hearty seeds were few, and perhaps this demon seed would not survive Yutrenta’s efforts to save it.

A rare find that reminds me why I love reading, April 4, 2012

This review is from: Moons' Kiss (Kindle Edition)

There are loads of different kinds of sci-fi to choose from--from hard sci-fi to far away alien cultures that stretch the imagination. But Moon's Kiss is one of those rare, mainstream science fiction novels that takes us into a reality not quite our own--but one that so easily could be ours.

Manerra, the young man who would choose almost any fate except that which is his: to rule. His brother Aya, another son of the gods, who knows his people stand on the brink of a change that even he can barely conceive of. And Kayarra, the "demon" who very well may decide the fate of an entire people, despite his efforts to the contrary.

I won't give away any spoilers as that would ruin the joy of reading this story, but I can say that from the tender moments of unfulfilled love to riots that threatened to topple a city, this book grips the reader and just doesn't let go.
